South Plantation High School could make Florida history this season thanks to its third string quarterback, a 17-year-old girl named Erin DiMeglio.
The Sun-Sentinel reports DiMeglio, the third-string QB or South Plantation, entered a preseason game for the team with 10 minutes remaining.
DiMeglio completed two passes in her short stint on the field.
"I had a girl try out at wide receiver that couldn't make it through practice and I had a kicker that really couldn't make a field goal, so I didn't keep them," coach Doug Gatewood said. "Erin can actually do what we ask of her...she completes the passes I ask, she knows the plays. ... Anything I ask her to do, she does."
Taking the field during a regular season game could be a first in the state of Florida. According to the Sun-Sentinel, state officials are not sure whether a female QB has taken the field. State records researched by the paper indicated 523 girls had played football since 1973 in the state, with 36 playing last season.
