Guide to Starting an Online Business

Entrepreneurs, who decide to try online business opportunities, should first identify the kind of information and services that you will provide to potential clients. Even before starting an online business, you need to plan your actions and know your strengths and weaknesses. You have to choose the areas where you can impart your expertise. It is important to be passionate and be a hard worker to make your business successful.

Building Market Share and Customer Base
Undertaking an online business can be the perfect means of setting up a massive client base and acquire sizeable share of the market in a specific industry. The truth is e-Commerce has delineated the market place and has enabled small and medium enterprises to reach out to the global market and compete with big corporations. The trends have moved from client focus to electronic media. Social media networking sites and smart phone technology has made it even more rewarding for online businessmen.

Development of Web Presence
You will definitely need more than a website to develop web presence. The personal computer and internet access are of primary importance. Before you place your business on the web, you have to choose and register a domain name which will identify your website. You have to make sure that this domain name is not yet being used by another entity. Web hosting is another fundamental startup element for your business venture. Remember that your enterprise can only exist on a web server. All web hosting services can be availed of by paying a monthly fee and provide the server in which to position your site.

Categories of Online Enterprises
Online business enterprises consist of simple retail concepts that sell merchandise through the internet as well as complex large internet marketing firms that concentrate on advertising, consumer traffic and direct sales. Small business owners should cater more to niche markets that focus on a specific product or industry. Niche markets make use of internet users looking for unique products based on the existing season.

Marketing Requirements and Duration
All online business opportunities call for a massive marketing campaign. This campaign is intended to ensure that entrepreneurs get a fair share of the market or greater number of customers to generate profit. It is very timely that internet marketing allows online business proprietors to reach their target market using social media, email blasts and other tools. On the other hand, search engine marketing makes it possible for consumers to locate businesses on the web. This is a way for customers to find commodities and facilities that will fit into their demands and needs.

The time to establish an online business all depends on the nature and objectives of the business. If you wish to put up a small undertaking, all you need is a computer and website. However, bigger enterprises require a marketing team, product inventory, accounting services and sophisticated website. You may need to seek the help of consultants to conduct market research, design a website, and establish an advertising and marketing program.

There are so many that you can choose from online business opportunities which have proliferated lately as a stable source of revenue in the absence of full time work. Learn more about- direct selling companies

Florida High School Uses Female QB in Preseason Game

South Plantation High School could make Florida history this season thanks to its third string quarterback, a 17-year-old girl named Erin DiMeglio.

The Sun-Sentinel reports DiMeglio, the third-string QB or South Plantation, entered a preseason game for the team with 10 minutes remaining.

DiMeglio completed two passes in her short stint on the field.

"I had a girl try out at wide receiver that couldn't make it through practice and I had a kicker that really couldn't make a field goal, so I didn't keep them," coach Doug Gatewood said. "Erin can actually do what we ask of her...she completes the passes I ask, she knows the plays. ... Anything I ask her to do, she does."

Taking the field during a regular season game could be a first in the state of Florida. According to the Sun-Sentinel, state officials are not sure whether a female QB has taken the field. State records researched by the paper indicated 523 girls had played football since 1973 in the state, with 36 playing last season.

Asian Shares Mixed Before Bernanke, Data Weighs Japan

-- Asian markets mixed ahead of Bernanke speech.

-- Nikkei down 0.8%, S&P ASX 200 up 0.1%, Kospi flat.

-- Below-view industrial output data weighs on Japan.

Asian markets were mixed early Friday, ahead of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech at Jackson Hole later in the day, while Japanese stocks softened after the release of weak industrial output data.

Tensions in Europe flared overnight as Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said that Spain will postpone a decision on a bailout until the terms of the rescue are clear. The prime minister of Slovakia also dampened sentiment when said that the chance of a euro-zone break up was 50%.

The euro was $1.2515 early Friday, compared to $1.2506 late Thursday in New York.

Investors were also getting ready for Mr. Bernanke's long-awaited speech at Jackson Hole later in the day, where many expect he could provide signals over the chances of a new round of quantitative easing.

Pinning hopes on central bankers has been a dominant theme throughout August, which has proven to be a month of two halves. In the first two weeks of August most of the major regional indices climbed, as European Central Bank President Mario Draghi's pledge to save the euro boosted sentiment. But over the last two weeks, markets have edged back slightly, due to a lack of catalysts and low participation during the holiday season.

Although Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index has already given up its August gain, several markets look likely to post gains for the month -- Japan's Nikkei was up 2.6% month-to-Thursday, while Australia's S&P ASX 200 up 1.4%.

On Friday the Nikkei was down 0.8%, as the dollar weakened against the yen -- the greenback was at Y78.55 compared to 78.62 on Thursday. Local sentiment was damaged following the release of worse-than-expected industrial output data for July, which dragged exporters. Honda Motor lost 1.7% and Nikon retreated 1.9%.

Troubled electronics company Sharp tumbled 8.4% in Tokyo after there was no new announcement between it and Hon Hai Precision Industry, the Taiwanese company with which it is negotiating a partnership.

Australia's S&P ASX 200 managed to remain positive, up 0.1%, despite another fall in iron ore prices to fresh multi-year lows. Iron producers, which have fallen heavily in line with declines in price of the metal, actually rose Friday as the rate of iron's drop lessened. Fortescue Metals Group added 1.8% and Atlas Iron advanced 2.2%.

South Korea's Kospi was flat, wish Samsung Electronics dropping 0.2%.

Half of Americans Die With Almost No Money - Structured ...

Home ? All, Headlines

Retireee contemplates financial readinessPrior to 2009, many injured plaintiffs were most concerned with investing their settlement proceeds in the stock and real estate markets. Since 2009, I have seen a shift in focus. The largest concern by injured plaintiffs today is outliving their money. There is good cause for worry.

A recent article posted on MarketWatch cites a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research showing that 46% of American retirees have just $10,000 when they die. While people can live with limited savings, the study?s findings are a reminder of how fragile our economic conditions are if a financial emergency occurs. A structured settlement that prepares for unforeseen medical and other uncertainties during retirement means injured parties can enjoy financial peace of mind when it matters most.

These are the SOL Republic Tracks Ultra. The company says these are its nicest, bestest headphones yet. Texas delegates planning floor mutiny over RNC rule changes

Members of the Texas delegation on Monday. (Goodwin/Yahoo)

TAMPA--On Monday morning, at a meeting of more than 100 Texas delegates and alternates at the Saddlebrook Resort 20 miles north of Tampa, one topic got the crowd more fired up than any other. Delegate Melinda Fredricks read aloud a letter condemning recent changes to the national Republican Party's rules that would allow the GOP presidential candidate to veto and replace state delegates.

"Our delegates are in shock that such an amendment even would be presented before the Rules Committee much less passed into rule," Fredricks said. "Please know from the Texas delegation standpoint that the only way a floor fight can be avoided is for this rule to be stricken."

At that point, the entire Texas delegation stood up and applauded.

Texans don't necessarily want to have an ugly floor fight on the same day the party officially nominates Mitt Romney. But they're willing to do it if their concerns about the rule aren't satisfied. The changes, which Mitt Romney's top lawyer put forward last week and Gov. Haley Barbour along with some other Romney supporters have embraced, are seen by opponents as intended to significantly weaken the power of grassroots politics and insurgent candidates such as Ron Paul. Many against the move worry that it would give national candidates the power to replace delegates--often grassroots party faithfuls--with big-time donors or friends.

"We truly consider that an infringement on our rights," Fredricks, a member of the rules committee, told Yahoo News of the changes. Today, states generally choose their delegates at state conventions, and then those individuals travel to the national convention to cast their vote for a candidate based on the share the candidate won of the primary or caucus vote of each state. But the changes could allow a candidate such as Mitt Romney to boot out any delegates who are assigned to vote for him and replace them.

While opposition to the rules began with Ron Paul supporters, it has spread to the entire Texas delegation and significant portions of those from South Carolina, Colorado, Virginia and Louisiana too. Mitt Romney's campaign lawyer Ben Ginsberg proposed the rule last week, but even some Romney supporters are staunchly opposed to the changes. Indiana delegate and Romney supporter James Bopp wrote in an email to RNC members that it's "the biggest power grab in the history of the Republican Party." Fredricks, a Romney supporter, says only 30 people of the more than 300 Texan alternates and delegates support Ron Paul, yet the delegation is "united" in its opposition to the rule.

At 2 p.m. on Tuesday, the Rules Committee members will debate whether the new rule should be struck down. Fredricks thinks she has the 29 members necessary to start a debate about the change, and is hopeful she can resolve the issue before the committee adjourns and joins the larger convention floor.

"We like to fight behind closed doors. ... Most of us are reluctant to do a floor flight," Fredricks said.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus told Salon Monday?that he does not expect a floor fight, though he did not explain why.

Paulites are among the staunchest opponents of the new rule. It would prevent insurgent candidates such as Paul from raking up delegate votes in caucus states where party conventions instead of the statewide vote determine how many delegates are awarded. ABC's Chris Good points out that Paul would not have won a plurality of delegates in four states if this rule had been in effect during this primary.

Paul supporter Karen Skrill, an alternate delegate from Vermont, said she and her husband, Stewart, a delegate, are upset about the changed rules.

"If this is how it's going to be, I don't want to be a Republican," Skrill told Yahoo News in a discussion on the floor Monday. The Skrills are retired farmers.

"Texas in general doesn't believe the national level should be picking delegates," added Jon Burgin, an alternate delegate from San Antonio who supports Paul. "It's pretty egregious."

Blessingways and the role of ritual | Talk Birth

In this circle No Fear
In this circle Deep Peace
In this circle Great Happiness
In this circle Rich Connection

I saw this gorgeous blessingway image pinned on Pinterest a while ago. Love it!

I?ve recently been on a reading streak with books on ritual. I?ve always been interested in ritual, especially women?s rituals, and I?ve planned and facilitated a lot of different rituals. I also have a huge variety of books that include information on planning rituals, women?s spirituality books, books about blessingways, and more. I?m branching out even more with my recent kick though, starting with buying books on officiating/planning wedding ceremonies (I have two weddings coming up in October). Then, I was talking to some mothers of newly teenage boys about planning some kind of coming of age rite/ritual for them and? bought some more books on creating sacred ceremonies for teenagers. (I?m good with books for women/girls, but sadly lacking in resources for ceremonies and celebrations for boys/men.) One of the books I purchased was Rituals for Our Times, a book about ?celebrating, healing, and changing our lives and relationships.? I left a mini-review on goodreads already:

There were some good things about this book about the meaning, value, purpose, and role of ritual in family life. I lost interest about halfway through and ended up skimming the second half. While it does contain some planning lists/worksheets for considering your own family rituals, the overall emphasis is on short vignettes of how other families have coped with challenges or occasions in their own lives. Also, the focus is on very conventional, mainstream ?ritual? occasions?birthdays, anniversaries, holidays?rather than on life cycle rites of passage and other more spiritual transitions in one?s life.

However, one section I marked was about the elements that make ritual work for us and I thought about blessingways and how they neatly fulfill all of the necessary ritual elements (which I would note are not about symbols, actions, and physical objects, but are instead about the emotional elements of connection, affection, and relationship):

Relating??the shaping, expressing, and maintaining of important relationships?established relationships were reaffirmed and new relationship possibilities opened.? Many women choose to invite those from their inner circle to their blessingways. This means of deeply engaging with and connecting with those closest to you, reaffirms and strengthens important relationships. In my own life, I?ve always chosen to invite more women than just those in my ?inner circle? (thinking of it as the next circle out from inner circle) and in so doing have found that it is true that new relationship possibilities emerge from the reaching out and inclusion of those who were originally less close, but who after the connection of shared ritual, then became closer friends.

Changing??the making and marking of transitions for self and others.? Birth and the entry into motherhood?an intense and?permanent life change?is one of life?s most significant transitions. A blessingway marks the significance of this huge change.

Healing??recovery from loss,? special tributes, recovering from fears or scars from previous births or cultural socialization about birth. My mom and some close friends had a meaningful ceremony for me following the miscarriage-birth of my third baby. I?ve also planned several blessingways in which releasing fears was a potent element of the ritual.

Believing??the voicing of beliefs and the making of meaning.? By honoring a pregnant woman through ceremony, we are affirming that pregnancy, birth, and motherhood are valuable and meaningful rites of passage deserving of celebration and acknowledgement.

Celebrating??the expressing of deep joy and the honoring of life with festivity.? Celebrating accomplishments of?one?s very being.

Notice that what is NOT included is any mention of a specific religion, deity, or ?should do? list of what color of candle to include! I?ve observed that many people are starved for ritual, but they may so too be deeply scarred from rituals of their pasts. I come from a family history of ?non-religious? people and I feel like I seem to have less baggage about ritual and ceremony than other people do. An example from the recent planning for a mother blessing ceremony: we were talking about one of the blessingway songs that we customarily sing?Call Down Blessing?we weren?t sure if we should include it for fear that it would seem too ?spiritual? or metaphysical for the honoree (i.e. blessings from where?!) and I remembered another friend asking during a body blessing ritual we did at a women?s retreat, ?but WHO?s doing the blessing?? As someone who does not come a religious framework in which blessings are traditionally bestowed from outside sources?i.e. a priest/priestess or an Abrahamic God?the answer felt simple, well, WE are. We?re blessing each other. When we ?call down a blessing? we?re invoking the connection of the women around us, the women of all past times and places, and of the beautiful world that surrounds us. We might each personally add something more to that calling down, but at the root, to me, it is an affirmation of connection to the rhythms and cycles of relationship, time, and place. Blessings come from within and around us all the time, there?s nothing supernatural about it.

I also think, though I could be wrong, that it is possible to plan and facilitate women?s rituals that speak to the ?womanspirit? in all of us and do not require a specifically shared spiritual framework or belief system in order to gain something special from the connection with other women.

In another book I finished recently, The Power of Ritual, the author explains:

?Ritual opens a doorway in the invisible wall that seems to separate the spiritual and the physical. The formal quality of ritual allows us to move into the space between the worlds, experience what we need, and then step back and once more close the doorway so we can return to our lives enriched.?

She goes on to say:

You do not actually have to accept the ideas of any single tradition, or even believe in divine forces at all, to take part in ritual. Ritual is a direct experience, not a doctrine. Though it will certainly help to suspend your disbelief for the time of the ritual, you could attend a group ritual, take part in the chanting and drumming, and find yourself transported to a sense of wonder at the simple beauty of it all without ever actually believing in any of the claims made or the Spirits invoked. You can also adapt rituals to your own beliefs. If evolution means more to you than a Creator, you could see ritual as a way to connect yourself to the life force?

As I continued to think about these ideas, I finished reading another book on ritual called The Goddess Celebrates. An anthology of women?s rituals, this book included two essays by wisewoman birthkeeper, Jeannine Pavarti Baker. She says:

The entire Blessingway Ceremony is a template for childbirth. The beginning rituals are like nesting and early labor. The grooming and washing like active labor. The gift giving like giving birth and the closing songs/prayers, delivery of the placenta and postpartum. A shamanic midwife learns how to read a Blessingway diagnostically and mythically, sharing what she saw with the pregnant woman in order to clear the road better for birth.

[emphasis mine, because isn't that just a cool idea?! I feel another blog post coming on in which I "read" my own blessingway experiences and how they cleared the way for my births]

Baker goes on to describe the potent meaning of birth and its affirmation through and by ritual acknowledgement:

Birth is a woman?s spiritual vision quest. When this idea is ritualized beforehand, the deeper meanings of childbirth can more readily be accessed. Birth is also beyond any one woman?s personal desires and will, binding her in the community of all women. Like the birthing beads, her experiences is one more bead on a very long strand connecting all mothers. Rituals for birth hone these birthing beads, bringing to light each facet of the journey of birth?

Luke Nease, 7, of Spokane, has his eyes checked by Dr. Stephen Maher on Friday at Spokane Eye Clinic. Luke has refractive amblyopia, commonly known as ?lazy?eye.?

To qualify for treatment through Project Access, patients must live in households earning less than 200 percent of the federal income guidelines and provide a referral from a primary care provider, including those at community clinics. For more information, go to www.spcms.org/projectaccess or call (509)?532-8877.

Luke Nease was an unusually squirmy kid, but his mother never suspected vision?problems.

Luke regularly saw his pediatrician, who also never suspected the boy couldn?t see out of his left eye. It took a school vision screening to raise a flag; a subsequent eye exam found he has refractive amblyopia, aka ?lazy?eye.?

?It was really very frustrating, because it was not until he was 4 or 5 that it was caught,? Teresa Nease said Friday, as Luke underwent a vision check at the Spokane Eye Clinic. ?And we should have been patching? ? now Luke wears a patch over his right eye to improve his?left.

As required by state law, public schools throughout Washington screen students and refer those with vision problems for professional eye exams. The idea is that kids who need them will get glasses and more serious problems can be identified. In Luke Nease?s case, the screening ? the family lived in the Seattle area at the time ? had the intended effect. But in Spokane, many kids who are referred for eye exams don?t get them, said the nurse who oversees the school district?s screening?effort.

Screenings will begin in September after the start of school. About 13,500 Spokane students a year get screened for vision problems. Of those, 10 percent to 14 percent have trouble seeing, said Marianne Fischer, the nurse who leads the district?s vision screening?program.

Parents of children who don?t pass get letters referring the students for professional eye?exams.

Follow-up rates ? the number of kids who then get an exam and glasses if they need them ? aren?t tracked, Fischer said, and she was reluctant to provide an estimate for the district. But at Logan Elementary, where she serves as lead nurse, she said about 50 percent don?t get the care they need. That leaves those students at a disadvantage in the?classroom.

?Vision is how most kids learn,? Fischer said. ?We?re a very visual society. Most of what we pick up is through vision. Those kids in the back row (who can?t see well) ? they?re not picking up?anything.?

A good student?s performance might tank. Unable to follow along in class, another student might become disruptive. Teachers often can recognize the signs of vision problems, Fischer said. But when students don?t get their glasses or other treatment, they fall further?behind.

Dr. Jeffrey Colburn, a pediatric ophthalmologist at the Spokane Eye Clinic, said he?s seen a few kids thought to have learning disabilities who actually just needed?glasses.

Many kids who can?t see well truly don?t know what they?re missing, he said. They think what they see, or don?t see, is?normal.

?You put them in glasses, and their whole world opens up,? Colburn?said.

?Not high on their?list?

Logan wouldn?t be alone if only half the kids who failed vision screenings got follow-up care. Studies in recent decades have examined follow-up rates for failed screenings, the reasons for low ones, and the effects of poor vision on?students.

In 1998, fewer than 33 percent of students in a Baltimore study who showed signs of vision problems got follow-up exams. A 1999 study at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee found as few as 32 percent of kids who failed day-care screenings got?exams.

The assumption, noted a 2006 study published in The Journal of School Nursing, was that a lack of money and access to services led to low follow-up?rates.

And that study did find some trends related to?income.

Parents without cars, phones, vision insurance and less than a high school diploma or GED were less likely to get follow-up eye care for their children. Families who earned more than twice the federal poverty level were more likely to seek eye care, wrote Linda Kimel, the study?s author and an Illinois school?nurse.

Paying for exams might pose the most trouble for families that fall in the gap between Medicaid and private insurance, said Colburn, the pediatric ophthalmologist. They don?t qualify for assistance but can?t swing an exam and glasses. Colburn said his clinic works with patients through Project Access, a network of doctors and hospitals that provides health care to low-income, uninsured Spokane County?residents.

But other factors are at play, too. In the ?06 study, some families cited logistical complications ? when all the adults work, no one?s available to take children to appointments. In other cases, parents simply don?t believe the results of the test or consider vision care a low priority compared to concerns like food and?shelter.

In general, paying for the exam isn?t the problem for Spokane parents ? even when they can?t afford it, Fischer said. Plenty of clinicians provide free screenings to those who need them, she said, and nurses refer families to the Lions Club or eyewear retailers who offer free or reduced?rates.

The problems, she said, are getting to the exam, for families with no phone and no car; paying for glasses; and then paying for replacement glasses when the student?s prescription changes or he loses or breaks?them.

?Here (at Logan) we?re giving them food on Fridays to take home for the weekend,? Fischer said. ?(Eye care is) just not high on their?list.?

Add to that the fact that many Logan students don?t speak English at home. Nurses work through translators to communicate with their parents. The process can take weeks or?months.

?We screen them in the fall,? Fischer said. ?We hope they have glasses by spring break? ? the better part of an academic year spent in a?blur.

?They never told?anyone?

In some cases, like Luke Nease?s, school referrals for eye exams lead kids to eye doctors who spot more serious problems than a need for glasses, Colburn?said.

?I?ll have kids who come in and (the parents) tell me, ?Yeah, they failed their eye exam (at school) for the last three years,??? Colburn said. ?And I?m like, ?We could have been working on this for three?years.???

Children?s vision develops from birth until around age 8. But some may never see an eye doctor until they?re teenagers, when a vision test required for sports participation might send them?in.

?And sometimes these kids will have an eye issue that impacts their eye development as a younger kid, and we can?t do anything about it,? Colburn?said.

One example: anisometropic amblyopia. Both eyes appear normal, but one is sending blurred or wrong images to the brain because a nerve pathway failed to develop. The brain learns to ignore the weaker eye, so the child essentially operates with just one eye without anyone knowing?it.

Caught before 8 or so, the condition can be treated with glasses and maybe a patch, Colburn said. By the early teens, it?s too?late.

From children?s perspective, he said, their vision grows slowly blurrier, and they don?t notice. Or they assume everyone else sees the same way. Or they fear teasing once they?re in?glasses.

?You start asking them, ?How long have things been blurry?? The kid will say, ?Oh, a couple years.? And they never told anyone,? Colburn?said.

Piecemeal?approach

Citing a need to catch problems that could inhibit learning, Washington state requires public schools to test students? vision five times ? in kindergarten and first, second, third, fifth and seventh?grades.

Nurses work most aggressively to follow up with parents of kids with the worst vision, Fischer said. Several each year are identified at Logan with 20/100 vision, meaning they can see only from 20 feet away what could normally be seen at 100 feet. Beyond sending those referral letters, they don?t have time to do the same for every student, she?said.

She worries about those who still don?t have glasses by the end of seventh grade ? or whose vision problems develop after?that.

?Now they?re completely through the cracks,? Fischer said. And in high school, ?the pace is so fast that if you can?t see, you get left?behind.?

Fischer wishes there were an easy way for every kid whose family couldn?t afford them to get free glasses. Nurses try to help by referring families to resources, but it?s a piecemeal?approach.

One piece she?s excited about: the 8-foot-wide, 62-foot-long trailer that will visit three of the district?s poorer elementary schools soon after classes start. In September, students at Logan, Bemiss and Whitman will receive vision and hearing tests in the Lions Club?s health-screening?trailer.

Students with vision problems will receive applications for glasses paid for by the?club.

Members of the Lions Club sell hot dogs and crab dinners, run beer gardens and demolition derbies ? among other fundraising efforts ? to pay for glasses for children and adults who can?t afford?them.

?If (children) have vision problems and they?re not identified, it will affect their ability to learn, how they feel about themselves, which will lead to many other issues throughout their lives,? club member Rick Keinholz?said.

As a child, Keinholz said, he had no idea he couldn?t see. He squinted to make out distant objects, but he thought that was normal. Finally assessed in the fifth grade, his vision was?20/650.

?I cannot describe for you what it was like,? he said, ?to put on glasses and sit in the third row and see the board?clearly.?

Killed for dancing: 17 Afghans beheaded in attack on party

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Insurgents beheaded 17 civilians in a Taliban-controlled area of southern Afghanistan, apparently because they attended a dance party that flouted the extreme brand of Islam embraced by the militants, officials said Monday.

The killings, in a district where U.S. Marines have battled the Taliban for years, were a reminder of how much power the insurgent group still wields in the south ? particularly as international forces draw down and hand areas over to Afghan forces.

The victims were part of a large group that had gathered late Sunday in Helmand province's Musa Qala district for a celebration involving music and dancing, said district government chief Neyamatullah Khan. He said the Taliban slaughtered them to show their disapproval of the event.

All of the bodies were decapitated but it was not clear if they had been shot first, said provincial government spokesman Daoud Ahmadi.

Information was only trickling out slowly because the area where the killings occurred is largely Taliban controlled, Khan said. The Taliban spokesman for southern Afghanistan could not be reached for comment.

Many Afghans and international observers have expressed worries that the Taliban's brutal interpretation of Islamic justice will return as international forces withdraw. Under the Taliban, who ruled the country from 1996 to 2001, all music and film was banned as un-Islamic, and women were barred from leaving their homes without a male family member as an escort.

Helmand is one of the areas seeing the largest reduction in U.S. troops, as the force increase ordered up by President Barack Obama departs. The U.S. started drawing down forces from a peak of nearly 103,000 last year, and plans to have decreased to 68,000 troops in country by October.

One of the most worrying trends to accompany the drawdown has been a surge in attacks by Afghan forces against their international allies, and another shooting came on Monday morning, though it appeared to be accidental.

Two American soldiers were shot and killed by one of their Afghan colleagues in the east, military officials said, bringing to 12 the number of international troops ? all Americans ? to die at the hands of their local allies this month.

But Afghan officials said Monday's attack in Laghman province was a separate case from the rash of recent insider attacks on international forces, because it appeared to have been unintentional.

The incident unfolded when a group of U.S. and Afghan soldiers came under attack, said Noman Hatefi, a spokesman for the Afghan army corps in eastern Afghanistan. When the troops returned fire and ran to take up fighting positions, an Afghan soldier fell and accidentally discharged his weapon, killing two American soldiers with the stray bullets, he said.

"He didn't do this intentionally. But then the commander of the (Afghan) unit started shouting at him, 'What did you do? You killed two NATO soldiers!' And so he threw down his weapon and started to run," Hatefi added. The U.S. troops had already called in air support to help with the insurgent attack and the aircraft fired on the escaping soldier from above, killing him, Hatefi said.

NATO spokesman Lt. Col. Hagen Messer of Germany confirmed that two international soldiers were killed by an Afghan soldier in Laghman province, but declined to give further comment.

Insider attacks have been a problem for the U.S.-led military coalition for years, but it has exploded recently into a crisis. There have been at least 33 such attacks so far this year, killing 42 coalition members, mostly Americans. Last year there were 21 attacks, killing 35; and in 2010 there were 11 attacks with 20 deaths.

The chief spokesman for NATO forces in the country said coalition forces were not pulling back from collaborating with the Afghans because of the attacks.

"We are not going to reduce the close relationship with our Afghan partners," Brig. Gen. Gunter Katz told reporters in the capital.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said that he could not confirm any link between the attacker in Monday's shooting and the insurgency. In previous insider attacks, the Taliban have quickly claimed responsibility and named the assailants. Mujahid did not comment on the other attacks in the south, which is watched over by a different Taliban spokesman.

Meanwhile, Helmand officials reported that 10 Afghan soldiers were killed in an attack on a checkpoint in the south, and five were either kidnapped or joined their assailants.

Ahmadi, the provincial spokesman, said insurgents attacked the checkpoint in Washir district Sunday evening. Another four soldiers were wounded he said. The Afghan Defense Ministry said the checkpoint was attacked by more than 100 insurgents.

Ahmadi said the five missing soldiers left with the insurgents but it was unclear if they were kidnapped or went voluntarily.

Will Apple's smaller tablet be called the 'iPad Mini'?

11 hrs.

iPad Mini? iPad Nano? iPad Air??We don't actually know if Apple is even working on a smaller iPad. All we have to go on are?reports from anonymous sources and leaked parts?which are?allegedly?intended for this tablet. But that won't stop rumors about the devices's name from floating around.

CNET's Lance Whitney points out?that?the folks at Japanese blog Macotakara?? who've had a mixed track record when it comes to Apple rumors???say they've got a source who claims that the rumored tablet will be called?the "iPad Mini."

Apple blogger John Gruber has previously dubbed the device the "iPad Air" in passing, while suggesting that it will be announced in October, instead of sharing the spotlight with the next-generation iPhone in September.

"I don?t think Apple would want reviews of both a new iPhone and new-size iPad appearing at the same time," Gruber?writes. "The iPhone is too big, too cool, and garners too much attention ? and it?s in Apple?s interest to keep that attention undiluted."?

AllThingsD's John Paczkowski went with the label "so-called 'iPad Mini'" while explaining that he has "several sources" who confirm that Apple will indeed show off the device in October.?

For what it's worth, we frequently reach out to the folks at Apple and ask them if they're feeling crazy enough to?chit-chat about their upcoming products, but as it's their policy not to address such rumors, we'll have to?keep speculating until Apple sends out invitations to a very special event.?

How to become a one-income family | FamilyNews.com

The Family News Take - As a parent, staying at home and tending children has its advantages. However, it also brings a few negative consequences as well. One large problem many families face with a stay-at-home parent is living off a single income. When a family has two incomes, there is money to spend on frivolous and entertaining items. However, when one income is all that is available, it requires careful planning to ensure there is plenty of money to cover all expenses.?

It is becoming a popular idea to have a parent stay at home and tend to household duties. According to this article, the number of stay-at-home moms has held constant at 5 million over the past few years, while the number of stay-at-home dads is 176,000. Parents want to be near their children. They want to experience those precious moments in their children?s lives and as these statistics prove, many are willing to sacrifice a little extra income to have these opportunities.?

This article gives advice on how families can manage living off a single family income and things to think about before making this drastic lifestyle change.

Via Time, by Suzanna De Baca ? When I was growing up, stay-at-home moms were the norm, and many American household budgets were based on one income. A lot has changed since then, but there are still many parents who choose to leave their job and stay at home with the kids. And, of course, in many families it?s less of a choice than a necessity when someone gets laid off or child-care costs become too steep.

While the number of stay-at-home moms has been holding relatively steady in recent years, at approximately 5 million, the number of stay-at-home dads who managed the household last year while their wives worked was estimated to be 176,000. This may seem a small number in comparison, but it?s more than doubled over the last decade.

Passing on an eating disorder | smh.com.au.

NOTE: Found this?fascinating as my 10 year old daughter won?t eat solid food ? all has to be liquids and soups. Claire Vickery was not surprised when scientists announced that eating disorders have a genetic link, because she and her two daughters suffered from the illness.

Eating disorders specialist Professor Howard Steiger, of McGill University in Montreal, told a conference in Adelaide last week that new discoveries in epigenetics show mothers pass a genetic predisposition to eating disorders to their children.

?The science of epigenetics is relatively new,? he said at the National Eating Disorders Collaboration National Workshop. ?Epigenetics helps explain how adverse development, stress, malnutrition and other influences can affect development of mental-health problems ? including eating disorders.?

Ms Vickery, 56, said she had bulimia from the ages of 16 to 29. ?I?m sure I?m carrying the gene.?

However, the president of the Australian and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders, Dr Anthea Fursland, said that genes alone would not result in a child developing an eating disorder. ?Genetic influences do play a part but they will not cause an eating disorder on their own,? she said. ?Eating disorders arise as result of a combination of factors but the common factor in every case is dieting.?

Ms Vickery?s two daughters, Anna and Laura, both had eating disorders when they were younger. They have all recovered but Ms Vickery?s experience led her to set up the Butterfly Foundation, which encourages prevention, treatment and support of those affected by eating disorders.

Professor Steiger said epigenetics would play a large role in understanding eating disorders. ?If eating disorders are about anything, they?re about the ways in which environments switch on hereditary vulnerabilities,? he said.

?It will give us a better understanding how it is that some people develop an eating disorder. It?s not due to moral weakness or character flaws, but real susceptibilities, for which we can find real physical evidence.?

By identifying the genes, he hopes to develop a test and even medication.

One of Ms Vickery?s daughters, Anna Spraggett, who is 33 and has three children, said she was excited about the discovery. ?It?s a positive step forward to finding a cure and treatment,? she said.

While she thinks that environmental factors play a part, Ms Vickery said if parents were aware their children were susceptible, they could be mindful of stressful triggers.

?This is not about guilt for mothers,? she said. ?But if there was a take-home message, it?s to choose your words with children ? no fat talk in the household ? or ever, in fact.?

Nikkei: Japan government to broaden disclosure of CHAdeMo quick-charging standards

Nikkei: Japan government to broaden disclosure of CHAdeMo quick-charging standards

The Nikkei reports that the Japan government will broaden its disclosure of CHAdeMo quick-charging technology standards for electric vehicles, currently known by only a few automakers, to promote the spread of EVs and related industries.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry aims to accelerate the development of charging infrastructure, which is still not widespread. METI also hopes the effort will pave the way for lower EV prices by encouraging more competition.

Details of the CHAdeMo charging technology, developed by Nissan Motor Co. , Toyota Motor Corp. and others, will be made available at Thursday?s meeting of the Japanese industrial standards committee, an advisory panel to the industry minister. The standard is currently available to some automakers and power companies. Details to be disclosed about the technology include the shape of the plug that connects the car to the charger, and how to prevent electrocutions.

Mexico investigates why federal cops fired at U.S. govt. car

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? Mexican authorities are trying to sort out why a U.S. Embassy vehicle was shot up by federal police on a rural back road in mountains south of the capital, leaving two U.S. government workers wounded.

Officials from both nations said the federal officers were chasing criminals Friday morning when a hail of bullets was fired at the embassy sport utility vehicle, but the accounts left many questions unanswered.

The two American workers were taken to a hospital in the nearby resort city of Cuernavaca. One had a gunshot wound in his leg and the other was wounded in the stomach and a hand, said a Mexican government official who spoke on condition of anonymity. Hospital officials in Cuernavaca said the wounded were later transferred to a hospital in Mexico City in stable condition.

The U.S. Embassy did not release the names of the injured workers, who it said were heading to a military training base south of Mexico City. Its statement said the employees and a Mexican naval captain traveling with them were fired on by a group of men, and were chased when they tried to escape. The naval officer was not seriously injured.

Mexico's federal police agency acknowledged that its own officers fired on the embassy's SUV, which appeared to be armored and has diplomatic plates. It said the officers were in the area hunting for criminals, but it did not explain what happened.

Its statement said at least four vehicles fired at the embassy vehicle on a road south of the capital, but it did not clarify whether any or all of them were federal police units. Federal police spokesmen did not respond to The Associated Press requesting further comment.

A U.S. official who was briefed on the shooting said later that all the shots were fired by federal police.

Mexican prosecutors said in a statement late Friday that 12 officers based in Mexico City were being held for questioning. Officers based in the capital have jurisdiction only in Mexico City and in four suburbs of neighboring Mexico State, not in Cuernavaca.

The embassy employees were on their way to do training or related work at a military base, the U.S. official said.

"Apparently the police were looking for some bad guys and they ran into each other," said the official, who agreed to discuss the incident only if his name was not used. "It looks like it was just a bad mistake ... they just shot and kept shooting."

The shooting broke out in an area that has been used by common criminals, drug gangs and leftist rebels in the past.

Mexican officials said the Americans' vehicle initially was fired on by a carload of gunmen who first displayed their weapons as the embassy SUV drove along a stretch of dirt road off a highway that connects Mexico City to Cuernavaca. The U.S. driver of the Toyota tried to escape, but three other vehicles joined the original one in pursuing them down the dirt road and onto the highway.

Passengers in all four vehicles fired, and the Mexican naval captain called for help, government officials said. Federal police officers and Mexican soldiers then showed up on the road.

The SUV stopped on the highway, but it wasn't clear if the driver was halted by the chasers or stopped because of the wounds.

The vehicle was riddled with bullets, most concentrated around the passenger-side window. The area was cordoned off and guarded by more than 100 heavily armed marines and soldiers, and the highway was closed for hours. Investigators examined what appeared to be shell casings.

The U.S. Embassy said it was helping Mexico's government in its investigation of the incident. It said the wounded were not agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration or the FBI, but officials for neither country identified what agency they work for.

"They are receiving appropriate medical care and are in stable condition. We have no further information to share at this time," said Victoria Nuland, a State Department spokeswoman in Washington.

U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas who closely follows the affairs with Mexico, said both countries appeared to be working together to find out what went wrong.

"If the Mexicans are cooperating with U.S. officials to find out exactly what happened here then I don't think this will affect the U.S.-Mexico relationship," he said.

Attacks on diplomatic personnel in Mexico were once considered rare, but this was the third shooting incident in two years.

In 2011, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was killed and another wounded in a drug gang shooting in northern Mexico.

A drug-gang shooting in 2010 in the border city of Ciudad Juarez killed a U.S. consulate employee, her husband and another man.

While Mexico City has largely been spared the drug violence that hits other parts of the country, Cuernavaca has been the scene of drug gang turf battles involving remnants of the Beltran Leyva cartel.

Four Swiss killed in plane accident

ZURICH (Reuters) - Four Swiss citizens were killed when a flight between Belgium and Switzerland went down in eastern France, officials said.

The spokesman for the Swiss Foreign Ministry said the relatives had been informed and that the cause of the accident was not yet known. He declined to give any further details.

The flight went down at 1600 GMT on Friday in Solemont, east of the city of Besancon and just shy of the Swiss border, a French Finance Ministry official said in a statement.

India?s SMS Hoax Panic: Could It Happen In The U.S.?

Photo by vagawiLast week tens of thousands of migrants from India's northeast region fled urban areas as rumor ricocheted through text messages and social media that Muslims would attack them after Ramadan. Fake photos added to the rumors' credibility. Given how forward button happy we can be in the U.S., I can't help but wonder if a similar panic could happen here. I spoke with Shlok Vaidya, a former Department of Defense consultant turned entrepreneur in residence at the Tech Ranch Austin incubator, about how this happened in India and what it would take for something like that to happen here.
