Celebs, Kimmel join forces in faux movie trailer

ABC

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

What do you do after the trailer for a movie you never made gets 20 million hits on YouTube? That's a question Jimmy Kimmel had to answer after his "Movie: The Movie" star-studded parody racked up huge numbers of clicks following its post-2012 Oscars premiere.

But he knew what had to be done: Make another one!

"When you have a big success in Hollywood, there's only one reasonable thing you can do, and that is is cheapen it with a sequel," he told his "Live!" audience Sunday night after the 2013 awards fest. Then he premiered ... "Movie: The Movie: 2V."

Yet again the world is in danger, and it's up to Kimmel to organize the forces of good to save everybody. But this time there's no meteor hurtling toward the planet -- instead, sexy, deadly vampires, mummies and leprechauns have unleashed the "sexpocalypse," and no one is safe. Kimmel plays the double-eyepatch-wearing leader of an "Avengers"-esque task force that is the Earth's only hope.

Here's what you can expect from the 7-minute-plus trailer:

  • Jessica Chastain, watching the carnage, noting "Teenage girls and their weird moms don't stand a chance."
  • Gerard Butler imitating Liam Neeson's fierce, family-saving character from "Taken."
  • Brian Cranston playing the piano with his face.
  • John Krasinski morphing into a crime-fighting crustacean. "It's shrimpin' time," he gloats.
  • President Oprah Winfrey.
  • Kimmel's nemesis Matt Damon, in a full-body motion-capture suit eating a sandwich, kind of.
  • Amanda Seyfried singing and breakdancing in a "Les Miserables" dress.
  • A giant Channing Tatum saving the world.
  • Samuel L. Jackson toppling over an even more enormous Jenga game, also to save the world.

Yes, there's some swearing, but it's bleeped out. And, as Kimmel promises at the end of the video, Monday night's show will feature "a special behind-the-scenes look at the making of 'Movie: The Movie: 2V' for film buffs."

"Jimmy Kimmel Live!" airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on ABC.

Video: Tanks leaking at Hanford nuclear site

>>> trouble for another big program tonight. at this moment the most contaminated nuclear site in the country is leaking a mix of radioactive and toxic material into the soil. the waste is coming from old underground tanks in washington state 's hanford nuclear reservation , a site that produced plutonium for the bombs dropped in world war ii . officials say the leak is not an immediate threat since it will likely take years for the chemicals to reach the groundwater.

North Korea issues warning to US military

(CNN) -

Ahead of annual, routine military exercises between South Korea and the United States, North Korea issued its usual caustic objections Saturday.

It threatened "miserable destruction," if "your side ignites a war of aggression by staging the reckless joint military exercises ... at this dangerous time."

Though customary, the stark posturing by North Korea stands in the shadow of an underground nuclear test two weeks ago that was preceded by the launch of a long-range missile capable of transporting a warhead.

The detonation of the nuclear charge was the third in Pyongyang's history and the first under supreme leader Kim Jong Un's rule. South Korea's military reacted with fierce military drills, including a public display of newly deployed cruise missiles with pinpoint accuracy.

It has been on heightened readiness ever since.

The test also triggered a global wave of condemnation, including from Beijing, and plans for new sanctions against Pyongyang.

North Korea issued the objections to exercises Key Resolve and Foal Eagle scheduled for March and April to U.S. commander James D. Sherman, state run news agency KCNA reported.

The message was delivered over the phone in English, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

It also condemned the threat of new sanctions over North Korea's recent actions.

A United Nations military commission informed Pyongyang of the upcoming routine exercises, according to a joint statement from U.S. and South Korean military officials.

The commission also told North Korea that they are "not related with the current situations on the Korean Peninsula."

Around 10,000 U.S. forces will participate in Foal Eagle from March 1 to April 30. Key Resolve will involve 10,000 South Korean troops and 3,500 U.S. troops in exercises March 11 to 21.

Key Resolve will include U.N. troops and neutral supervisors.

Sports injury workshop to be held in Terrace

As children become more serious about sports at a younger age, the likelihood that they will sustain a sports injury increases.

But there?s a workshop coming to Terrace the evening of Feb. 21 aiming to teach parents, coaches, administrators and officials what they can do to prevent sports injuries, how to recognize them, and whether or not the young athletes they know have ever sustained a sports-related injury.

Sportsmart is a 90-minute workshop aims to keep more children out of the emergency room ? sports related injuries among youth account for close to 20 per cent of all hospital emergency room visits among children in Canada.

And it is estimated that up to 50 per cent of sports injuries are preventable and that parents and coaches hold the keys to some of the most effective sports injury prevention strategies, according to material provided by Sportsmart.

?This workshop has been getting hundreds of people attending in southern B.C., mainly due to the alarming increase in sports injuries in the youth over the past few years,? said Carmen Didier, the City of Terrace?s director of leisure services.

The city, SportMed BC, and Pacific Sport Northern BC are providing the workshop, which does require registration.

Caves point to thawing of Siberia: Thaw in Siberia's permafrost may accelerate global warming

Feb. 21, 2013 ? Evidence from Siberian caves suggests that a global temperature rise of 1.5 degrees Celsius could see permanently frozen ground thaw over a large area of Siberia, threatening release of carbon from soils, and damage to natural and human environments.

A thaw in Siberia's permafrost (ground frozen throughout the year) could release over 1000 giga-tonnes of the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere, potentially enhancing global warming.

The data comes from an international team led by Oxford University scientists studying stalactites and stalagmites from caves located along the 'permafrost frontier', where ground begins to be permanently frozen in a layer tens to hundreds of metres thick. Because stalactites and stalagmites only grow when liquid rainwater and snow melt drips into the caves, these formations record 500,000 years of changing permafrost conditions, including warmer periods similar to the climate of today.

Records from a particularly warm period (Marine Isotopic Stage 11) that occurred around 400,000 years ago suggest that global warming of 1.5?C compared to the present is enough to cause substantial thawing of permafrost far north from its present-day southern limit.

A report of the research is published in this week's Science Express. The team included scientists from Britain, Russia, Mongolia and Switzerland.

'The stalactites and stalagmites from these caves are a way of looking back in time to see how warm periods similar to our modern climate affect how far permafrost extends across Siberia,' said Dr Anton Vaks of Oxford University's Department of Earth Sciences, who led the work. 'As permafrost covers 24% of the land surface of the Northern hemisphere significant thawing could affect vast areas and release giga-tonnes of carbon.

'This has huge implications for ecosystems in the region, and for aspects of the human environment. For instance, natural gas facilities in the region, as well as power lines, roads, railways and buildings are all built on permafrost and are vulnerable to thawing. Such a thaw could damage this infrastructure with obvious economic implications.'

The team used radiometric dating techniques to date the growth of cave formations (stalactites and stalagmites). Data from the Ledyanaya Lenskaya Cave -- near the town of Lensk latitude 60?N -- in the coldest region showed that the only period when stalactite growth took place occurred about 400,000 years ago, during a period with a global temperature 1.5?C higher than today. Periods when the world was 0.5-1?C warmer than today did not see any stalactite growth in this northernmost cave, suggesting that around 1.5?C is the 'tipping point' at which the coldest permafrost regions begin to thaw.

Dr Vaks said: 'Although it wasn't the main focus of our research our work also suggests that in a world 1.5?C warmer than today, warm enough to melt the coldest permafrost, adjoining regions would see significant changes with Mongolia's Gobi Desert becoming much wetter than it is today and, potentially, this extremely arid area coming to resemble the present-day Asian steppes.'

(AP) ? Tamagotchi is re-hatching as an app.

Bandai America Inc. and Sync Beatz Entertainment are hoping to revive the electronic pet craze of the 1990s with a new mobile app launching Thursday for Android devices. The app duplicates the egg-shaped plastic toy that became a must-own sensation like Beanie Babies, Tickle Me Elmo and Furby after it was first released in 1996 in Japan.

Sync Beatz, which has licensed Tamagotchi from Bandai, is calling the app "Tamagotchi L.i.f.e." ? with "L.i.f.e" standing for "love is fun everywhere." Much like the original doodad, the app tasks users with taking care of a virtual pet by pressing buttons that simulate feeding, disciplining and playing with the critter on screen. If a Tamagotchi is neglected, it dies.

"The idea was to base the gameplay on the original Tamagotchi that everyone knows and loves," said Shin Ueno, chief marketing officer at Sync Beatz. "As we move along, every two months, we'll refresh the app, and it will evolve."

The colorful app, which Ueno said will later be available for Apple devices, features unlockable characters, backgrounds and shells. It's split between two modes: an old-school one that works like the original ? right down to three buttons on the shell ? and an app mode that utilizes the touchscreen and allows users to play rock, paper, scissors with their pets.

The "Tamagotchi L.i.f.e." app is free, and a version without ads costs 99 cents. While there have been a few Tamagotchi clones available for mobile devices, this marks the first official Tamagotchi app to come from Bandai, which has released updated versions of the toy since the first Tamagotchi hatched 16 years ago.

Sales of the toy have cracked the 78 million mark, and Tamagotchi paved the way for such virtual obsessions as "The Sims," ''FarmVille" and "Skylanders." The executives at Sync Beatz think Tamagotchi's "sweet 16" is the prime time to relaunch Tamagotchi for nostalgic twenty- and thirtysomethings, as well as a new generation.

"It's like comfort food," said Barry Stagg, chief communications officer at Sync Beatz. "I think Tamagotchi brings back good memories. When we were at the Licensing Expo last year, the first thing that people who came up to us and saw what we were doing tended to do was smile. I think there's an openness to build on Tamagotchi's brand equity."

That means Sync Beatz plans to leverage "Tamagotchi L.i.f.e." as more than simply a sentimental app. The company plans to launch a "Tamagotchi L.i.f.e." product line later this year with clothing, furnishings and accessories slathered with Tamagotchi imagery.

Sewage lagoons remove most -- but not all -- pharmaceuticals

Feb. 14, 2013 ? 2012 marked the 40th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, which established regulations for the discharge of pollutants to waterways and supported the building of sewage treatment plants. Despite these advances, sewage remains a major source of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and naturally occurring hormones found in the environment.

Many rural communities in the United States use aerated lagoon systems to treat their wastewater. The wastewater is pumped into at least one humanmade aerated lagoon, in which oxygen-loving and anaerobic microorganisms remove many of the contaminants. The water is then pumped into a series of other lagoons. Finally, the resulting water, known as the effluent, is discharged directly into a receiving stream.

The drugs, chemicals and hormone contaminants such as ibuprofen, caffeine and ethinyl estradiol from urban sewage treatment plants have been studied and monitored widely, but their occurrence in rural lagoon treatment systems is often overlooked.

In a new study led by Wei Zheng, a senior research scientist at the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center and an adjunct faculty member in the University of Illinois department of natural resources and environmental sciences, researchers determined the effectiveness of rural lagoon systems at removing these compounds from wastewater. The research was conducted jointly with the Illinois State Water Survey. The study appears in the journal Science of the Total Environment.

Scientists collected water samples in September and November from a rural wastewater treatment plant located in a small town in Illinois. The facility treats sewage wastewater in two aerated lagoons, using a sand tank for filtration. The effluent streams into a creek that flows into the Mackinaw River. The researchers collected samples from various steps during the treatment process for analysis.

The researchers then tested the samples for the presence of 21 commonly used PPCPs and hormones, including caffeine and ibuprofen.

The team found that the lagoon treatment system reduced concentrations of most of the tested compounds. The overall removal efficiency ranged from 88 to 100 percent in September, except for the compound carbamazepine, a drug used for the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder that is notoriously difficult to remove from wastewater. There were no detectable steroid hormones in the aerated lagoons and effluent.

Interestingly, the samples collected in November contained higher concentrations of all detected PPCPs than the samples collected in September. According to Zheng, this is most likely because the microorganisms that break down the compounds work best in warm weather.

Although the efficiency of rural sewage treatment lagoons is relatively high, this study shows that there is a significant increase in the occurrence of PPCPs in surrounding watersheds with the effluent discharge, which could change the rural aquatic environment.

"Some compounds are easy to degrade and remove using this lagoon treatment system, but some compounds are persistent," Zheng said. "When these persistent compounds are introduced into the environment through effluent discharge, they may contaminate water sources and affect the watershed ecosystem."

Because people eventually consume this water, the presence of PPCPs and steroid hormones is a concern, Zheng said.

"Pharmaceutical residues are usually detected in the aquatic environment at very low concentrations, below their therapeutic doses employed for medical purposes," he said. "However, long-term chronic exposure to these emerging contaminants in water supplies may jeopardize human and aquatic habitat health."

The research also is useful for addressing the potential risks of using rural sewage effluent for crop irrigation, especially as the occurrence of droughts increases, Zheng said.

More research needs to be conducted to understand the environmental fate and negative effects of PPCP and hormone contaminants, but for now, Zheng is happy that the information he and his team found will benefit rural communities to properly utilize lagoon treatment systems to handle their wastewater and help state and federal agencies formulate prudent regulatory programs on agricultural irrigation of rural sewage effluents.

"The (federal Environmental Protection Agency) doesn't have regulations or management strategies for controlling PPCP and hormone contaminants released from sewage effluents, so our information can raise the public's attention, help the EPA develop the best management strategies and thereby minimize the loading of these emerging contaminants into the environment and promote the safe and beneficial reuse of treated wastewater in U.S. agriculture," Zheng said.

The Illinois Sustainable Technology Center is part of the Prairie Research Institute at the U. of I.

Hackers use alert system for zombie warnings

DETROIT (AP) ? Warnings about the zombie apocalypse may seem pretty amusing, but officials say they're dead serious about figuring out who hacked into the nation's public warning system to broadcast such messages in a handful of states.

So far, people in California Michigan, Montana and New Mexico have heard the warnings about attacking zombies that have been sent over the Emergency Alert System.

"Local authorities in your area have reported the bodies of the dead are rising from their graves and attacking the living," the message warned. "Do not attempt to approach or apprehend these bodies as they are considered extremely dangerous."

The subject matter may be humorous, but Greg MacDonald with the Montana Broadcasters Association said the consequences of such attacks on the alert system could be severe.

"This looks like somebody being a prankster, but maybe it's somebody testing just to see if they could do this, to do some real damage," MacDonald said. "Suddenly you create a panic and people are fleeing somewhere and you end up with traffic jams and accidents and who knows what."

The U.S. recently replaced its old telephone-based alert system with a web-based one. The Federal Communications Commission sent an urgent advisory Tuesday urging stations to reset their alert system passwords, disconnect their Internet connections and take other steps to make sure the equipment is protected from outside attack.

In Michigan, hackers broke into the system with audio or text messages at two stations on Monday. Michigan Association of Broadcasters President Karole White said the breach appeared to be related to default passwords that the stations hadn't changed. The U.S. recently replaced its old telephone-based alert system with a web-based one.

In Los Angeles, a radio station that had its alert system breached sent out a zombie message, according to Richard Rudman, a broadcast engineer and vice chair of the California State Emergency Communications Committee. He declined to name the station but said any that were hacked were using default passwords for their alert systems or lacked adequate computer security.

The FCC on Tuesday also asked stations to check their equipment to make sure no further unauthorized alerts were queued up for future transmission, according to a copy of the advisory provided by the Montana Broadcasters Association.

No one has been arrested in connection with the hacking incidents.

All U.S. broadcasters are required to be part of the Emergency Alert System, which evolved from Cold War-era systems dating to the 1950s and '60s. The system was created so the president could address the public in a national emergency, but it's mainly used by state and local authorities to deliver weather warnings and Amber Alerts. The first national test of the revamped system was in November 2011.

WNMU in the northern Michigan city of Marquette was broadcasting an episode of "Barney and Friends" just before 4 p.m. Monday when an ominous voice warned of zombies on the loose. The station quickly caught the errant message and disabled the system.

"There were really no complaints," said station general manager Eric Smith. "A couple of viewers ... called, wondering what it was all about."

Michigan FBI spokesman Simon Shaykhet said his office has been notified but declined further comment. The Associated Press left messages with representatives of the Federal Communications Commission and Department of Homeland Security.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said its public alert and warning system wasn't breached and the hacking incidents did not affect its ability to activate the system nationally. FEMA also said it's supporting the FCC and other federal agencies on the investigation.

White, who oversees the alert system in Michigan, says she's confident that systems there are now secure, though any breach is a concern.

"We feel fortunate they were not able to get into the entire Emergency Alert System ? that's the good news," she said. "The bad news is they got in at all."

HOME School Need Not Look Like School At All

Sometimes people think we are weird. ?Or, they think our kids don't ever do school. ?Nothing could be further from the truth! ?(Well, we are a little weird.) ?Our children are being educated in our home and most of the time it doesn't look like school.

When the weather is nice the younger children take their spelling tests outside on the driveway with sidewalk chalk. ?This beats pencil and paper any day.

Our family plays a lot of board games and many are educational. ?Why, yes, we count these as "school". ?The kids are learning!

We make many crafts at our house, some big and some small. ?Every single one is a school project. ?Painting, gluing, cutting, drawing = art class!

My husband leads our family devotion each evening. ?We study one book of the Bible at a time, chapter by chapter. ?This is part of the children's school. ?It matters not what time of day it is. ?This is their Bible class. ?

When the boys help with yard work (us or a neighbor) ?I do not consider that skipping school. ? I can make a whole list of things they are learning during that time. ?Topping the list would be service and Christian character. ?I've heard of government schools counting a trip to the bowling alley or pizza restaurant, or amusement park, as a school day. ?If those trips count as one of the 180 days, you better believe some hard work counts!

Election years provide great opportunities for learning. ?We've even been known to do "school" on occasion while watching TV. ?The kids have learned quite a bit about the election process, perhaps more than most. ?I recently did a government unit study with them and they weren't the only ones who learned a lot.

One of the best teachers is the family budget. ?It makes for a great learning tool for the older children. ?Oh sure, we have to put in our time with the Algebra and Geometry text books but we've also had our kids work on a budget, pay bills, and balance the checkbook. ?We've used the big white board for figuring out exactly what is coming in and what must go out. ?The kids have benefited greatly. ?

Just as the family budget has been a teacher for the older kids, playing store is a fantastic teacher for the younger kids. ?Do I count playing store with my first grader as school? ?You bet! ?She's writing numbers when she makes price tags, adding when she gives me my total, and counting money when she gives me my change. ?Why buy a math workbook to teach those things? ?A few hours of playing store and she's covered the equivalent of an entire workbook. ?

Memorizing scripture is a huge part of our school also. ?Right now our oldest son is memorizing the book of James. ?Each week my husband gives all of the children verses to memorize. ?Two of our children also participate in AWANA and memorize several bible verses each week. ?Regardless of the time of day when we are doing scripture memory work, that is school. ?

All of our kids love to read. ?For a special treat I have let them spend an entire school day reading. ?Reading is learning! ?(By the way, we are?very?particular about what the kids read.) ?A good book is a classroom all by itself.??

I try to turn any traveling we do into school. ?Our family has had the privilege of accompanying Dad on business trips from time to time. ?Before we go I do some research on museums and historical sites in the area. ?I check books out of the library and we read about these things before we go and after we get back. ?A couple of years ago we were able to travel with Dad to Birmingham, Alabama. ?I decided to do a unit study on The Civil Rights Movement before we left and we spent several hours at the Civil Rights Museum while we were there. ?We also read books about Martin Luther King, Jr. and visited the 16th Street Baptist Church. ?That one trip was the equivalent of several weeks of school. ?No, the kids weren't seated in desks in a traditional classroom setting but they learned a whole lot. ?We've visited The Smithsonian Museums, Monticello, The Washington Monument, Colonial Williamsburg, The Jamestown Settlement, The Lincoln Memorial, and many other places.?

Writing letters to grandparents, thank you notes for gifts, and grocery lists takes care of a lot of what would be busy work. ?Why have children write in workbooks writing C-A-T and D-O-G when you can have them help with writing down the grocery list. ?This gives them lots of writing and spelling practice and helps Mom too!

All questions lead to school. ?When a child asks how to spell something we have them look it up in the dictionary. ?When they ask a question about where something is we have them look at a map. ?Watching the World Cup led to learning a lot of geography for our boys. ?When something in the newspaper sparks a discussion someone (or everyone) gets a report assignment. ?Visits to the zoo and aquarium are always followed with research reports. ?Visits to the beach lead to shell books and marine life studies.

Pets and pests can be part of schooling too. ?When the boys killed some snakes once, we studied all?about them. ?When our cat had kittens many years ago we learned quite a bit about reproduction. ?One home we lived in was near a pond and we ended up with TONS of tadpoles one spring. ?We made posters on the life cycle of a frog. ? ??

The daily happenings of life have provided wonderful schooling opportunities. ?Broken bones have led to unit studies. ?Certain food discussions have led to health studies. ?Diseases and illnesses have led to interesting studies as well. ?We once studied penicillin.

I always use holidays for school - Presidents Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, St. Patrick's Day, Chinese New Year, Columbus Day - all of these dates on the calendar result in library books, crafts, special activities and learning!

My philosophy is simple - when the kids are learning, they are "doing school". ?As a home school mom I am not required to teach from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ?The children do not have to sit in desks or work in workbooks (although we do at times). ?When there is a vigorous game of basketball going on in the driveway, or the older boys go on their daily run that's P.E. ?When my 7 year old works in the kitchen and she has to double, or triple ingredients, that's math. ?Our oldest boy is a history buff. ?He reads every history book he can get his hands on. ?He knows more about world history than his father and I combined. ?All of that reading he does is school. ?There are many ways to learn and sometimes the best ways are not what people are used to. ?I try not to concern myself with what others think. ?My husband and I are products of government schools and all of our children are much farther along in every subject than we were at any of their ages. Character is most important to us and that is what we have concentrated on the most. ?Have we produced perfect children? ?NO. ?Far from it! ?We have, however, been able to help them shape their worldview, used the Bible as our primary textbook, enjoyed quality family learning time, helped guide them in choosing friends, established strong bonds between siblings and much more. ?Of course I am not saying that these things cannot be done apart from homeschooling. ?I am saying that homeschooling has allowed us to do these things.?

My best advice to homeschool moms is always this - DO NOT try to replicate a public school classroom in your home. ?That is not what home schooling is about. ?Home schooling need not look like school at all.

NYC Valentine's Day sewage tour back by 'demand'

NEW YORK (AP) ? Lovers of the unusual are getting another chance to impress their Valentines this year in New York City.

The Department of Environmental Protection is again offering Valentine's Day tours of the Newtown Creek sewage treatment plant in Brooklyn's Greenpoint section.

The DEP says it's offering three tours this year due to "overwhelming demand."

The 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. tours were quickly filled. So another was added at 11 a.m. Thursday.

Highlights include the plant's giant egg-shaped digesters, which break down noxious waste into harmless sludge and gas.

During last year's tour, the plant's gung-ho superintendent warned the visitors a digester egg was about to emit a foul odor. It didn't disappoint.

Epic Games Closes Impossible Studios, Infinity Blade: Dungeons On ...

impossible studios
Despite starting up a mere 6 months ago and formed by members of the former Big Huge Games, Impossible Games has shut down.

Epic Games Founder Tim Sweeney stated that, ?When former members of Big Huge Games approached Epic last year, we saw the opportunity to help a great group of people while putting them to work on a project that needed a team. It was a bold initiative and the Impossible folks made a gallant effort, but ultimately it wasn?t working out for Epic.?

Members of the team have however been provided with 3 months of severance pay and the option to form a new studio later with the Impossible Studios moniker and logo. Which admittedly is still awesome.

However, this development now means that the upcoming and hotly anticipated iPad action RPG Infinity Blade: Dungeons will be on hold as ?we figure out the future of the project? according to Sweeney.

Paternos challenge Freeh report on scandal at PSU

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? Joe Paterno's family released its response to Penn State's report on the Jerry Sandusky scandal Sunday, attacking Louis Freeh's conclusion that the coach hid sex abuse allegations against his longtime assistant.0

In a report commissioned by the family, former U.S. Attorney General and Pennsylvania Gov. Dick Thornburgh said the investigation by former FBI director Freeh resulted in a "rush to injustice." That report, authorized by the university, found that Paterno and three former administrators covered up child sexual abuse allegations against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

Those findings last July were unsupported by the facts, said the family critique released.

"The lack of factual report for the ... inaccurate and unfounded findings related to Mr. Paterno, and its numerous process-oriented deficiencies, was a rush to injustice and calls into question the credibility of the entire Report," Thornburgh was quoted as saying in the family's analysis, posted on the website paterno.com.

Months in the making, the report was billed as an independent analysis of the work by Freeh, who defended his report Sunday.

"I stand by our conclusion that four of the most powerful people at Penn State failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade," he said in a statement issued through a spokesman.

The family's report concluded that observations related to Paterno in the Freeh report was unfounded, and were a disservice to Paterno, the university community and Sandusky's victims "and the critical mission of educating the public on the dangers of child sexual victimization."

The central claim that Paterno "was engaged in a conspiracy ... there's simply no basis anywhere in the report for that finding. That in my view renders the whole report of very little value," Thornburgh said in an interview with The Associated Press. "There's simply nothing in this record, in the Freeh report, that indicates he was involved in any way."

Freeh's findings also implicated former administrators in university president Graham Spanier, athletic director Tim Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz. Less than two weeks after the Freeh report was released in July, the NCAA acted with uncharacteristic speed in levying massive sanctions against the football program for the scandal.

"Taking into account the available witness statements and evidence, it is more reasonable to conclude that, in order to avoid the consequences of bad publicity, the most powerful leaders at Penn State University ? Messrs. Spanier, Schultz, Paterno and Curley ? repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky's child abuse," Freeh wrote in releasing the report.

The former administrators have vehemently denied the allegations. So, too, has Paterno's family, though a detailed counter-offensive began in earnest this weekend.

The family's findings said that Paterno never asked or told anyone not to investigate or report an allegation made against Sandusky 12 years ago, Saturday, Feb. 9, 2001.

Paterno also never asked or told anyone not to discuss or hide information reported by graduate assistant Mike McQueary about the 2001 allegation, the critique said, and followed university protocol in reporting information to superiors and left it to them to "to investigate and report as appropriate."

Thornburgh said he found the report at points to be inaccurate, speculative and fundamentally flawed about the role ? if any ? played by Paterno.

Appearing on ESPN's "Outside the Lines" program Sunday, Paterno family attorney Wick Sollers said it was too early to talk about legal action, though they were "evaluating all the legal options at this stage of the game."

Paterno's widow, Sue Paterno wrote in a letter Friday to former players that she sought a "full record of what happened."

The treatment of Paterno ? fired over a late-night telephone call ? as well as the handling of the Freeh report and the resulting NCAA sanctions by university leadership remain sensitive topics with some unhappy groups of alumni, ex-players and community residents.

Penn State said Sunday that Freeh was brought in to conduct an independent investigation of the school's response to the allegations, and not actions of entities unrelated to Penn State. Freeh offered 119 recommendations to strengthen governance and compliance, the majority of which have been implemented, the school said.

"It is understandable and appreciated that people will draw their own conclusions and opinions from the facts uncovered in the Freeh report," the school said.

Freeh, in his report, said his team conducted 430 interviews and analyzed over 3.5 million emails and documents. The former federal judge said evidence showed Paterno was involved in an "active agreement to conceal" and his report cited email exchanges, which referenced Paterno, between administrators about allegations against Sandusky in 1998 and 2001.

According to Thornburgh's findings, Freeh's report relied primarily on about 30 documents, including three notes authored by Paterno, and 17 emails. Four emails referenced Paterno ? none sent by the octogenarian coach who notoriously shunned modern electronic technology.

Sandusky, 69, was sentenced to at least 30 years in prison in October after being convicted last summer of 45 criminal counts. Prosecutors said assaults occurred off and on campus, including the football building.

His arrest in November 2011 triggered the turmoil that led to Paterno's firing days later. Under pressure, Spanier left as president the same day. Curley was placed on administrative leave, while Schultz retired.

Spanier, Curley and Schultz are awaiting trial on obstruction and conspiracy, among other charges. They have maintained their innocence.

Critics have said that Freeh's team didn't speak with key figures including Curley, Schultz and Paterno, who died in January 2012 at age 85. Spanier spoke to Freeh six days before the report was released July 12.

Freeh said he respected the family's right to conduct a campaign to "shape the legacy of Joe Paterno," but called the critique self-serving. Paterno's attorney was contacted for an interview with the coach, he said, and Paterno spoke with a reporter and biographer before his death but not Freeh's team. Paterno's attorney did provide documents.

Curley and Schultz declined numerous requests for interviews, Freeh said. They have been facing criminal charges since November 2011.

Freeh on Sunday cited grand jury testimony by Paterno in 2011 in which Paterno said McQueary relayed to him the 2001 allegation against Sandusky of a "sexual nature" with a child.

He referred to a key point in the July report in which he said the administrators drew up a plan that called for reporting Sandusky to state public welfare officials in 2001. Curley later write in an email that he changed his mind "after giving it more thought and talking it over with Joe," according to Freeh's findings.

Said Freeh on Sunday: "These men exhibited a striking lack of empathy for Sandusky's victims by failing to inquire as to their safety and well-being, especially by not even attempting to determine the identity of the child" in the 2001 allegation.

The Paterno family report said Freeh chose not to present alternative and "more plausible" conclusions about Paterno's actions. Their attorney, Wick Sollers, responded Sunday that Freeh didn't take the time to read the family's critique, or address accusations of procedural shortcomings.

Sollers said he met with Freeh's team and pledged full cooperation. Joe Paterno's cancer diagnosis prevented he coach from being interviewed, but son and former assistant coach Jay Paterno spoke with Freeh's group.

"A failure to consider the facts carefully is exactly the problem our expert analysis highlights," Sollers said. "Everyone, including Mr. Freeh, should take the time to study this report."

Besides Thornburgh, Sollers also brought in former FBI profiler and special agent Jim Clemente, described as a child molestation and behavioral expert; and Dr. Fred Berlin, a psychologist from Johns Hopkins Hospital whose profile lists him as the founder of the institution's Sexual Disorders Clinic. The analysis included information from lawyers for the former school administrators.

Freeh's report ignored decades of research and behavioral analysis over how to understand and investigate child victimization cases, the critique said, and expert analysis showed Sandusky "fooled qualified child welfare professionals and law enforcement, as well as laymen inexperienced and untrained in child sexual victimization like Joe Paterno."

According to the family review, Paterno's last written words before his death focused on Sandusky's victims.

"Good side of scandal - it has brought about more enlightenment of a situation (sexual abuse of young people) in the country," the Paterno family report said.

The NCAA improperly relied on the report and never identified a rules infraction based on Sandusky's crime, let alone NCAA jurisdiction over ensuring competitive balance, the family analysis said. An NCAA spokeswoman said the organization stood by its previous statements and declined comment Sunday.

A four-year bowl ban and steep scholarship cuts were included among the sanctions, while 111 wins between 1998 and 2011 under Paterno were vacated. It meant Paterno no longer holds the record for most wins by a major college coach.

WriteRoom (for Mac)

Starting up a high-end word-processor like Office 365's?Microsoft Word and Apple's Pages is like stepping into a candy store. On display for you to enjoy are toolbars, ribbons, and dialogs offering dozens of tasty-looking formatting features that let you choose color-coordinated fonts for headings and text, set custom page margins and line spacing, create multiple columns, draw pictures, and other high-tech delights. In contrast, when you start up WriteRoom ($9.95, direct), the pioneering minimal word-processor for OS X, you get a window and nothing else. Pages and Word give you a lot more.

The whole point of WriteRoom is that it gives you less. If you're a writer who wants to get well-written text on the page, and you don't want to be distracted by options that have nothing to do with the actual words you're writing, then less is more. The fewer visible options there are on screen, the more you can concentrate on your writing. WriteRoom makes concentrating easier than any other app I've tried.

Unlickable
When WriteRoom first arrived a few years ago, it was a surprise success in the Mac market. All other Mac apps were designed so that (as Steve Jobs said about the buttons in OS X) they looked so good "you'll want to lick them." WriteRoom, in contrast, made the Mac screen look like the text-only green-screen monochrome monitor that your parents bought for their PC in 1987. Compared to the programs that ran in that old green PC screen, WriteRoom has its many clever options hidden away. By default the latest version looks more like a piece of typing paper than a green-screen monitor, but it's still the least distracting writing environment I've used on a modern computer.

In fact, I'm writing this review in WriteRoom, concentrating on typewriter-style text that appears on a plain gray full-screen background, and it's a calming, Zen-like experience unlike anything else on a modern computer. I tested WriteRoom on a Mac; a separate version, which I haven't tried, is available for iOS devices.

Writing in WriteRoom
By default, WriteRoom creates files either in a bare window with a gray background using a monospaced (typewriter-style) font. A keystroke lets you switch between windowed and full-screen mode. The windowed mode displays a current word-count in the title bar. Full-screen displays a word count unobtrusively in the lower-left corner, but (again by default) hides the count while you're typing to avoid distraction.

You can customize the word count feature so that it displays any combination of line count, word count, character count, and the amount of time you've spent working on a document?or you can hide all these things. Other options let you turn on live spell-checking, grammar-correcting, and autocorrect. An option that's useful if you need to keep track of the time you spent on any writing job is one that keeps a spreadsheet that records the editing time of each writing session.

You can change the whole appearance of the screen by switching among what WriteRoom calls Themes. Some of these are supplied with the app, others downloadable from the vendor's site. Available themes include versions of the old green-screen (my favorite) and some silly themes that make the screen look like an ancient Commodore 128 or a piece of old linen. You can modify a theme merely by choosing a different screen font or by opening a customization menu. If you're willing to find or create the needed sound files, you can even assign sounds that will play when you type a letter, delete something, or press Enter.

By default, WriteRoom creates plain text files?no italics, no bold, no headlines, just words, saved in the standard .TXT format that any text-based application can open. If you want to apply bold, or italic, or any other formatting, you can open the .TXT file in another word processor, or you can use WriteRoom's option to convert your file to Rich-Text Format (RTF), which is readable by all word processors. In its RTF mode, WriteRoom can create tables and bulleted or numbered lists.

One minor annoyance is that if you want to convert an existing document from plain text to RTF format, WriteRoom creates a completely new, untitled RTF file containing the text of your original .TXT file and you have to save the new RTF file with a new name. I would have preferred this feature to work like Apple's TextEdit, which replaces the TXT file with an RTF file so you don't end up with two more separate documents as you do with WriteRoom (and, to be fair, with all other word-processing apps).

WriteRoom relies on the built-in powers of OS X to handle document formats. You can use WriteRoom to open Microsoft Word and other standard document files. An imported Word file will preserve basic formatting, and WriteRoom will edit it in RTF mode. Features like tables and lists are preserved, but not multiple columns. When I want to concentrate on the content of a Microsoft Word file, I sometimes open in it WriteRoom to get the job done.

Worth Trying
With its barebones feature set, WriteRoom isn't for everyone, but it's an app that's worth trying by every writer?and everyone in school or business whose writing would improve in a low-distraction environment. WriteRoom deserves its name: it provides room for writing that you can't find anywhere else.

Fat Bike Summit ? Good News for Fat-Bikes | FAT-BIKE.COM

IMBA Lends Support for Advocacy Efforts

2nd-annual-fat-bike-summit-and-festival-poster-for-web1Last weekend, more than 100 fat bike enthusiasts, bike and outdoor industry professionals, land managers, and congressional staff braved whiteout conditions to attend the 2nd Annual Fatbike Summit and Festival at Sawtelle Mountain Resort in Island Park, Idaho. Gathered to discuss fat-bike access in national and state recreation areas, attendees got hands-on experience through demos, group rides and a 25K race. By the end of the three-day conference, event organizers emerged with new allies and a strategy for supporting this rapidly growing winter sport.

?We hit one out of the park,? said Gary Sjoquist, QBP advocacy director. ?Our Friday session was attended by about 40 land managers and included folks from Yellowstone and various U.S. Forest units. They all got to ride fat bikes and learned how minimal their impacts are to groomed Nordic ski and snowmobile trails.?

Conference-goers also learned about private and state recreation areas that have successfully integrated fat bikes. Grand Targhee Resort in Wyoming now allows limited fat biking along its 15-kilometer Nordic trail system. The key, says Resort Manager Andy Williams, is establishing standards of trail etiquette, and actively managing when and under what conditions fat bikers can ride the trails.

In Washington, the Methow Valley Sports Trail Association (MVSTA) adopted similar practices for fat bike corridors along some of its 120 miles of groomed trails. Fears among Nordic skiers have dissipated as they realize fat bike tires cause little disruption. And Methow Valley land managers are beginning to see an economic opportunity.

?This year, the MVSTA is hosting more fat bike events than Nordic because fat bikes draw more racers,? said Sjoquist. Methow Valley organizers note that ski ticket sales have increased because fat bike cyclists purchase trail passes, too, Sjoquist added.

And while the Summit?s most visible focus was creating partnerships beyond the bike community, it also strengthened alliances within. Before coming to Island Park, Anna Laxague, IMBA regional director for the Pacific Northwest, had never ridden a fat bike. Her presence in Idaho sent a strong signal that the influential national advocacy group takes the emerging sport very seriously. Laxague, who reportedly loved her first fat bike experience, said IMBA will support advocacy efforts to build industry and grassroots support; unite diverse trail users through common goals; and help communities use fat biking to boost their recreation economies.

fat-bike-summit-logo-2013-175wFlush with the success of the Fat Bike Summit and Festival, Sjoquist is optimistic about the future and ready to take on an ambitious agenda. Projects include fat bike pilot programs at national parks and forests, and continuing outreach and education for land managers and politicians across the U.S. The goal, Sjoquist emphasized, is to open new territories for this rapidly growing sector of the bike industry.

?There are 10,000 fat bikes in existence today, and it?s estimated that number will double by next year,? Sjoquist observed. ?That will put a lot more demand for access to national parks and state forests. Land managers will need a strategy for how to will handle it all. It opens tremendous possibilities, and challenges, too.?

Notable attendees included employees from Idaho Parks and Recreation, Bureau of Land Management, Yellowstone National Park with U.S. Forest Service administrators and rangers from Idaho, Wyoming and Montana. Staff members from Senator Mike Crapo?s office and Congressman Mike Simpson were joined by local business representatives.

Co-hosted by QBP and Fitzgerald?s Bicycles in Victor, ID, the Fat Bike Summit and Festival was supported by presenting sponsors Surly and Salsa Cycles. Other sponsors included IMBA, Fat-Bike.com, Q-Outdoor, Adventure Cycling, BicyclArt, 45NRTH, 9:ZERO:7, BikeFlights, Revelate, Grand Targhee Resort and Snake River Brewing. Photos and race results from the Fat Bike Summit and Festival are available on www.fatbikesummit.com.
